It has been a turbulent weekend for two of our FBoS trained bikers, who were dealing with separate incidents in Offaly and Kerry.

Tony, program leader at Moyross Youth Academy Scramble Initiative, put his skills to use when a young rider flipped off his bike during a Motorcross event. The patient presented with various injuries and was only semi-conscious. The helmet had come off as the strap was not attached. Tony reassured the parents extensively while going through all the FBoS protocols and even got mum involved in securing her son’s head and neck until the Ambulance Service arrived. The rider was stabilised and transferred onto a combi board and vacuum mattress before being airlifted to hospital.

In a separate accident one of our lady FBoS bikers, who only attended the course in early March, was first on scene the same day. She found the rider unconscious, not breathing, with bilateral leg fractures and a possible pelvic injury. Following the FBoS Algorithms she performed a jaw thrust, allowing the rider’s breathing to return, so much so he was even trying to talk to her. Fire Service personnel arrived but she was put in control of the helmet removal protocol, before the patient was further stabilised and transferred to hospital.

Many thanks to both FBoS members for their courageous intervention and very best wishes for a speedy and full recovery to the injured bikers!
